This is a questions that I've heard my whole life. I've had freckles since i was a kid.
I feel like my freckles are a lot more visible than they were when I was younger. (Now let me just clarify that i do not have a super big case of freckles some people might not even consider them to be freckles in comparison to those that have a really big case of them)
Growing up I was always told to stay out of the sun. Because i would get sun spots just like the rest of the women in my family. I remember when I was young I would touch my grandmas hands and caress all her freckles her arms.
I would ask her how she got them and her response was always from working in the sun in the fields in Mexico. I loved being in the sun and i always responded that i wasn't going to let getting more sun spots or freckles stop me from enjoying being outside. She would tell me that you couldn't get rid of them so it was up to me.
All the women in my family have freckles and they've become more and more prominent as they gotten older. They've tried everything and anything with very little luck to no avail. SO at a young age I took it upon myself to embrace my freckles. I saw how much they disliked this aspect of them and to this day they are very self-conscious.
We had an event recently and a customer asked me this question.
Can you get rid of freckles?
I knew that our healing beeswax lotion bar has helped some of my aunts with lightening their freckles or sun spots on their arms but they weren't fully going away. So I decided to do some research after the event.
The answer is NO, you can not get rid of freckles.
BUT, you can diminish their appearance! There's actually a few different way to lighten them.
You can do laser treatments, chemical peels. cryotherapy, topical products, and buttermilk are way to lighten them! Some freckles fade on their own during the wintertime and are exasperated with the sun and don't fade overtime.
I had heard of cryotherapy in the past but i didn't know what it was. Its the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze and kill freckles. Although with this method it'll get worse before it gets better because the area that was treated will darken and shed within a few days.
Another one that stood out to me and transported me to my childhood is buttermilk!
I thought was really cool and never heard of using buttermilk!
In the article I read it recommended mixing it with oatmeal to create a face mask. Oatmeal does have lightening properties but the buttermilk contains lactic acid which helps lighten the freckles!
It transported me back to my childhood because my grandma used to make me face masks that consisted of oatmeal, milk, and a squeeze of a lime. We would do this at night because the acid of the milk and lime could burn my face when coming into contact with UV rays.
I've grown to embrace and love myself freckles and all, but I understand some people are extremely self-conscious about them and want to know how they can treat them. These are some of the ways they can be treated and possibly reduce their appearance. As always this isn't any medical advice and you should ask your doctor or dermatologist for their medical opinion and diagnosis.
