Can I Mix Skincare products and brands?!

The short answer is maybe. And even if the answer is yes. Would you want to? It depends.

Let’s take a look at what we mean. Brands make most if not all their skincare line to compliment and work well with each other. Maximizing the efficacy of the products.

What happens if you mix brands knowing this. Products that are not meant to work with each other might not provide the results you are looking for.

Instead, these products might lead to irritation and other skin conditions. Leaving you worse off then what you were beforehand.

But not always.

You should always batch test before full application. To make sure your skin will not react with your skin.

Remember the universal rules of never mixing things like retinol and vitamin c.

You also need to be aware of over using ingredients in more than one product you use.

Some general rules to follow. Remember to use new products for at least 3 months before deciding they do not work. It is usually recommended for you to pat the products on instead of rubbing them on. Do not mix things like glycolic acid and retinol.

Following some of these simple routines can help in figuring out which products you can mix.

Dr Geeta Yadav is a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Facet Dermatology. “Using the right ingredients in the wrong way can have significant consequences. Whether that’s dryness, irritation and redness or more serious damage to the skin. Our skin is a delicate ecosystem.”

We have to protect this beautiful ecosystem. And there are general rules to always follow.

When using retinol and vitamin c. Avoid anything with exfoliating ingredients that same day.

Taking the necessary precautions of doing your research. Patch testing. Using products for 3 months at least. Not mixing acids and exfoliators. Will give you a good starting point if you feel so inclined to mix products.

If you have concerns do not mix. Consult with your esthetician or dermatologist if you experience discomfort.

In short. Can you mix skincare brands? As we covered in this article the short answer is yes. But. There are things to look out for. Like which ingredients not to combine. And being careful of not overusing the same ingredient in the same day.

With careful planning, consideration and some research you can combine skincare brands. Always do your research. Always patch test. And give it time to work.
